2017-2018 Board

Spotlight in Leadership - Board of Directors

The Board would like to take this opportunity to thank all the members for being part of our FPA of Ventura community. We had a great year! We grew and revitalized our board in 2017 with the addition of Mike Marangola, CFP®, Erik DullenkopfCFP®, Richard Womack, CFP® and Elizabeth Saghi, CFP® . Mike has taken on the Advocacy Chair position, Erik is contributing to the Program Committeee, Richard has taken on the responsibility of the Treasurer's duties and Liz took on the task of the Santa Barbara Regional Coordinator (RC).

We are extremely happy to announce a new addition to the Board for 2018, Pattye Zeto from Skyline Home Loans. She attended her first board meeting and infused it with her enthusiasm and fresh ideas. Welcome aboard Pattye!

Discussion/Study Groups
Santa Barbara (RC) Liz Saghi, CFP® successfully reintroduced the Santa Barbara Discussion/Study group this year bringing in local presenters to speak on current and relevant topics. Thousand Oaks/Conejo Valley RC Mark Edwards with the help of Juan RosCFP® continues to have lively meetings with a good group of return attendees. Pete KozakCFP® RC for Camarillo/Ventura held several meetings this year and is gearing up for more consistency in 2018. John BuergerCFP®, our current Chapter President is filling the RC seat in San Luis Obispo and struggling to reactivate the group. He is looking for someone in the area to assist him or take the reins and get the group back on track. If you are interested in helping out please contact John

Committees
Kristen Hafner, CFP® has taken on the challenge of the Media Committee she hopes to start a LinkedIn page for the Chapter and is looking to revamp the website. She will also be the Chapter President-Elect in 2018. The Programs Committee continues to shine with Paul Norr, CFP® as the chair. His committee has proven to be quite popular and now includes Erik Dullenkopf, CFP®, Liz Saghi, CFP®, Elana Foxx and Sara Kalsman, CFP® all working toward giving members the best educational and social networking experience at our quarterly meetings. If you have suggestions for speakers or topics don't be shy - contact anyone of them to share your ideas.

Our fledgeling NexGen Committee chaired by Galen Herbst de Cortina, CFP® held mixers in Westlake Village and Santa Barbara plus a roundtable event at Mission Wealth this year. Galen also participated in the Annual SoCal NexGen Summit an experience he is hoping more Ventura Chapter young planners will take advantage of in 2018. As our new Advocacy Chair Mike MarangolaCFP® jumped right into his duties. He attended the Leadership Conference and has been monitoring and reporting back on legislation and issues that impact the financial industry. He recently met with local Representative Julie Brownley during Advocacy Week.

Richard WomackCFP® had big shoes to fill when taking over Treasurer, but they seem to fit him just fine. Past Treasurer and current Director-at-Large and Parlitarian of the group, Barry Bolker, CFP® still keeps a watchful eye on the finances.

I hope you will join us at our quarterly meetings in 2018 and meet these hard working members of the FPAVC Board, perhaps you might even decide to dip your toe in the "Leadership Pool."

On behalf of the FPAVC 2017-18 Board of Directors and myself I would like to wish all our members a beautiful and fulfilling holiday season! See you next year!

In Case You Missed It

"Why didn't someone warn me about..."

A recent thread posted on the All Members Open Forum regarding advice planners would like to have received at the beginning of their careers proved to be very popular with many members contributing to the post. Here is a brief summary of their thoughts.

"KEEP IT SIMPLE" when speaking with clients, in your marketing, client financial plans, etc. This seemed to be the overall advice.

Below is a summary of the most popular advice that was shared:

  1. Require all decision makers be present at initial meetings
  2. Don't talk too much
  3. Be an active listener
  4. Find out their "why" with the prompt "tell me more"
  5. Find your niche
  6. Pushy sales and complex financial plans are detrimental to client relationship "simply, simplify"
  7. Be aware of the impact of tech decisions
  8. Portfolio management and CRM - make sure they are the best and scalable
  9. Be mindful of poor design and useless content in advisor marketing material
  10. Don't listen too much to the hype about all the great marketing tactics that would catapult your biz - they don't exist

Have anything you would like to add? Shoot me an email and I'll collect our chapter members' "pearls of wisdom" for a future newsletter.

 Dear FPA Member Friends,

As you may know the House and Senate recently unveiled new tax bill measures that many accountants and financial experts predict will take effect next year. For those of you with clients in particularly high-tax brackets, you're probably already talking with them about what they should do now. I would like to highlight a few of the important changes that pertain to real estate and in particular California. Click to read full article.
